Elmhurst quarry flood control

The Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control facility is an 8,300 acre-foot flood control facility, which began construction in 1993 and was fully operational in 1996.  The facility has storage of up to 2.7 billion gallons of water, utilizing a predetermined operating plan that diverts floodwater via a tunnel underneath Illinois Route 83. The Elmhurst Quarry is the largest of four mechanically-operated flood control facilities in DuPage County. Quarry tours are co-sponsored by Dupage County Stormwater Management, Elmhurst Historical Museum and Elmhurst park District.

I think it has saved taxpayers and businesses in DuPage County hundreds of millions of dollars.
— Jim Zay, chairman of DuPage county's stormwater management committee.
